5 Ways to Practice Self-Care and Nutrition

Nutrition is vital to all functions of being human. Without adequate nutrition, we are unable to focus on much else. Living in a fast paced world can often leave us feeling like there isn’t enough time for meals, so we end up scarfing down whatever food is nearby while being distracted by a hundred other things, leaving us feeling less than optimal. You can’t care for others if you aren’t caring for yourself, and your nutrition is one of the biggest pieces of that self-care pie.

In talking about diet and nutrition, we aren’t suggesting you follow a strict diet, restrict yourself of the foods you love, or give in to any of the ideas that diet culture has perpetuated. Your body is perfect exactly as it is. Self-care and nutrition go hand in hand because it is about fueling yourself with what you need to embody your amazing self, which is unique and personal to each person.

Here are 5 ways to bring more self-care into your daily nutrition:

1. Practice eating mindfully.

Mindful eating involves bringing your full attention to your meal times and noticing how your food makes you feel. Set aside distractions during meals such as watching TV, scrolling on social media, or eating while working. Try to instead focus on utilizing all the senses as you eat. Truly enjoy the taste, take in the smell, admire the colors and textures. Having gratitude for where your food came from while eating is another way to bring about mindfulness. 2. Limit stress while eating.

When you are stressed and scarfing down food, your body cannot properly digest your meal. To limit digestion issues, take 3-5 deep breaths before enjoying your meal. Take steps to do other stress relieving activities before eating if you feel worked up, such as taking a walk, doing a few stretches, or listening to calming music.

3. Load your plate with feel good foods.

Knowing what foods make you feel best is key. To know what is best for your body, pay attention to how you feel after certain meals. Also, if you are noticing more sensitivities, it could be worth talking to your doctor about Food Sensitivity testing. Filling your plate with lots of color and foods you love is an easy way to ensure you are getting the nutrients you need.

4. A little meal prep goes a long way.

Batch cooking a big tray of veggies and some protein to have on hand throughout the week is a game changer. Keeping it simple leaves room for adding creativity each day, such as adding chicken one day to a salad and the next to a burrito. 5. Hydrate!

Adequate hydration is often an overlooked element of daily nutrition. Generally, adults need 9-13 8oz cups of water everyday to function optimally. Without proper hydration, your digestion slows, you mood is affected, and your overall health suffers. Make your water feel extra special by adding fresh fruits, cucumber, lemon, or herbs.
