Embracing Joy and Relaxation: The Benefits of Coloring for Self-Care

When was the last time you sat down with colored pens and paper and just colored to your heart’s content? Coloring for self-care brings about a sense of joy, relaxation, and peace. Yet, as adults we rarely allow ourselves the pleasure. The best part is that it is so accessible. To buy a coloring book is not generally expensive. However, there are also tons of online coloring printouts available for free. You could even make your own coloring sheet from a drawing of your own!

Coloring is a great choice if you find yourself looking for the constant stimulation and distraction of your phone, TV, or computer. Often times we reach for our devices for comfort, but then are left feeling more anxious and disconnected. Coloring is a way to direct your focus in an engaged and meditative way. Our electronics, on the other hand, can be a source of numbing. It also can be a fun way to bond with the kiddos in your life, or even with friends or a partner. Taking time to color is more than just fun, although that would be reason alone to do it!

There are even more benefits to coloring for self-care, such as:

  • Tune into mindfulness. Coloring requires that you focus on intricate patterns and unique designs. This might lead you to find yourself being mindful without even trying. By immersing yourself in the act of coloring, you can temporarily let go of worries or distractions. In place of mental rumination, you may experience a sense of calm and centeredness.
  • Connect to your creativity. Connecting with our creative sides can be tricky sometimes if the thought of starting a project feels daunting. Coloring is a simple way to sit down for 10-15 minutes and explore what colors you are drawn to using, what design you want to follow, and may even open the door to more creativity.
  • Nurture your inner child. Remember as a child when you would color at the drop of a hat just because you felt like it? Coloring is a fun and playful activity that can bring out that inner child who knew creativity was essential. Accessing that childlike sense of joy, spontaneity, and lightness, can be so healing.
  • Soothe stress and boost your mood. Because of all the above benefits, coloring by association reduces stress. Making time to do something that feels fun, comforting, and mindful is a nurturing way to soothe stress and boost your mood.
