The Importance of Hydration for Self-Care: Tips to Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water throughout the day can often be a challenge. Busy lives can create a habit of neglecting our most simple self care needs, drinking enough water being a big one. Getting to the end of the day and realizing we didn’t drink enough water can feel like defeat, especially when it results in a pounding headache. Self-care requires that we listen to our bodies, and hydrating is a major way we can do that. It may be that we enjoy drinking water, or it could be that age old fight to get anything that doesn’t taste like soda down. Whatever the situation, the importance of hydration for self-care is that our bodies and minds need ample hydration to do their job. As a result, it’s our job to support ourselves in that.

Every function, organ, cell, and tissue in our bodies needs water to survive. The amount of water we each need, however, varies based on many different factors. Weight, heigh, sex, how much exercise you do, medications you may be on, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as other factors all come into play. It’s important to take into consideration all of your specific circumstances and talk with your doctor about the ideal water intake for your body. The general rule of thumb is around 8 glasses a day, so that may be a good place to start as you discover what is right for you. Staying hydrated is incredibly important to preventative healthcare as well. So know that when you are staying hydrated, you are caring for current you and future you.

Here are some tips and tricks to stay hydrated that feel more like self-care than a chore:

  • Invest in a reusable water bottle that you love to drink out of. Perhaps with a straw spout, a handle, or in your favorite color. Bonus points if it lines up with your water intake goal amount.
  • Make it spa water. Adding a slice of lemon, some fruit, or some cucumber to your water is sure to make it more enjoyable and health-boosting! You can even add a splash of juice (free of sugar if possible) for a little extra interest.
  • Drink water first thing in the morning. After brushing your teeth, take a mindful moment to drink a full glass of water. Your hydration can be depleted overnight, so your body will thank you for starting the day off with water.
  • Boost your water with electrolytes. There are many great electrolyte powders you can opt for, minding the sugar content. You can also simply add a pinch of sea salt, a squeeze of lemon, and a drop of honey to make your own.
  • Schedule your water breaks. If you struggle with remembering to drink water, set alarms on your phone to remind you. Soon it will become habit, but always aim to drink water at least once an hour throughout the day.
  • Be mindful of alcohol and caffeine intake. You may think you are getting hydration because you are drinking liquids, but beware, both these substances will dehydrate you. Up your water intake when consuming.
  • Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. At that point, dehydration has already set in. Pay attention to the color of your urine as well for clues of dehydration, and the lighter the better.
  • Eat water-rich foods. Foods like cucumbers, watermelon, peaches, celery, zucchini, tomatoes, and leafy greens are full of hydration. They can’t function as your only source of hydration, but they are an amazing addition.
